BREAKING: Belleville Basketball Star Sydney Savoury Commits to UConn

BELLEVILLE, Mich. — One of Michigan’s brightest high school basketball stars is taking her talents to one of the most decorated programs in women’s college basketball.

Belleville High School standout Sydney Savoury, a five-star guard ranked No. 9 nationally in ESPN’s Class of 2027 SC Next 100, announced Friday that she has verbally committed to the University of Connecticut.

Savoury revealed her decision to ESPN’s Shane Laflin, choosing head coach Geno Auriemma and the Huskies over a group of national programs that included North Carolina, USC, Texas, Notre Dame and UCLA.

The commitment makes Savoury UConn’s first announced recruit in the Class of 2027.

A Michigan Star on the National Stage

For those following girls basketball across Metro Detroit, Savoury’s rise has been difficult to ignore.

The Belleville standout has established herself as one of the nation’s premier scoring guards, combining offensive versatility, perimeter shooting and the ability to create opportunities off the dribble.

During the 2025–26 high school season, Savoury averaged an impressive 27 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game, helping Belleville finish with a 25–2 record.

Her accomplishments extend well beyond Michigan.

Savoury earned the 2025 Gatorade Michigan Girls Basketball Player of the Year award and continued building her national reputation through elite grassroots basketball competition.

In 2026, she represented the United States at the FIBA Under-18 Women’s AmeriCup, helping Team USA capture a gold medal.

She also earned MVP honors on the Nike EYBL circuit, further establishing herself among the country’s top prospects.

Why UConn?

For decades, UConn has been synonymous with excellence in women’s basketball.

Under Auriemma, the Huskies have developed generations of elite players and maintained a championship standard that continues to attract top recruits.

Savoury’s decision gives UConn a highly regarded scoring guard with the ability to contribute at multiple levels offensively.

Her commitment also comes just one day after UConn traveled to Ann Arbor and suffered a loss to Michigan.

While the Huskies left the state with a defeat on the court, they secured a significant recruiting victory with the commitment of one of Michigan’s top prospects.

DVS Analysis: Another Major Moment for Michigan Girls Basketball

Savoury’s commitment is more than a recruiting headline.

It’s another example of the talent being developed in Metro Detroit and throughout Michigan’s high school girls basketball programs.

UConn doesn’t recruit players simply because they can score. The Huskies look for athletes capable of competing within a demanding system built around discipline, basketball intelligence and championship expectations.

Savoury has already demonstrated her ability to compete against elite national talent.

The next challenge will be translating those skills to the college level.

For Belleville, the commitment represents another major accomplishment for a program that has become a significant presence in Michigan girls basketball.

And for younger athletes across the region, Savoury’s journey provides another example of how local talent can reach the national stage.

What’s Next for Savoury?

Savoury is preparing for her senior season at Belleville while looking ahead to her future in Storrs, Connecticut.

Her verbal commitment is an important milestone, although it is not the same as signing a National Letter of Intent or completing the university’s enrollment process.

For now, Belleville basketball fans will have another opportunity to watch one of the nation’s top prospects before she begins her college career.

Detroit Varsity Sports will continue following Savoury’s senior season and the latest developments in Michigan high school basketball recruiting.
