Breslin Center Semifinals: Metro Detroit Teams Battle at Final Four

Several Metro Detroit programs competed at the MHSAA Boys Basketball State Semifinals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, with high stakes and championship dreams on the line.

In Division 1, Auburn Hills Avondale saw its impressive season come to an end after falling to Rockford 38–35 in a defensive battle. Despite a late push fueled by the Avondale student section and key plays from the Yellow Jackets, Rockford sealed the win with clutch free throws in the closing seconds.

Later in the day, Brother Rice fought hard against East Lansing but came up just short in a dramatic finish. East Lansing knocked down a late three-pointer to secure a 55–52 victory, ending the Warriors’ tournament run despite a standout performance from Jordan McDaniels, who nearly carried Brother Rice to a comeback win.

In Division 2, Romulus Summit Academy North faced Freeland in a physical semifinal matchup. After a close first half, Freeland took control in the second half and defeated Summit 57–47, advancing to the state championship game.

Detroit University Prep also competed in the Division 2 semifinals but struggled early against Hudsonville Unity Christian, who built a large halftime lead. University Prep showed fight late in the game with improved defense and scoring, but the deficit proved too much to overcome as Unity Christian secured a 59–44 victory.

Although the Breslin Center run ends for several Metro Detroit teams, the region once again showed its strength with multiple programs competing on the state’s biggest stage.

Player Spotlight:

Curtis Britton (#4) – West Bloomfield

Curtis Britton delivered a standout performance in West Bloomfield’s 62–56 victory at the Chris Webber Best of Michigan Tournament, finishing with 20 points and taking control during a pivotal third-quarter run.

Britton scored efficiently at all three levels, attacking gaps in the defense and knocking down timely shots as West Bloomfield extended its lead coming out of halftime. His ability to create offense when it mattered most helped shift momentum firmly in WB’s favor.

Beyond the scoring, Britton set the tone defensively — applying ball pressure, forcing turnovers, and turning defense into transition opportunities. His composure and two-way leadership played a major role in West Bloomfield closing the game out late.

Stat Line: 20 points

Impact: Momentum-changing third quarter, two-way leadership
