The Michigan High School Athletic Association is now accepting applications for its Student Advisory Council for the Class of 2028, offering student-athletes across the state an opportunity to help shape the future of high school sports in Michigan.

Eight students, four boys and four girls will be selected for two-year terms beginning with the 2026–27 school year. The council focuses on promoting leadership, sportsmanship and the overall student-athlete experience.

Who Should Apply?

The opportunity is open to current sophomores (Class of 2028) who:

  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Participate in athletics

  • Demonstrate leadership on and off the field

  • Are involved in extracurricular activities, community service or work experience

Applicants must also submit:

  • A completed application with short-answer responses

  • A letter of recommendation from a school administrator

What the Council Does

Members of the Student Advisory Council meet regularly throughout the school year, both in person and virtually to discuss key issues impacting high school athletics.

The group focuses on what the MHSAA calls the “4 S’s” of educational athletics:

  • Scholarship

  • Sportsmanship

  • Safety

  • Sensible scope

A fifth area, student leadership, is also a major emphasis.

Council members help:

  • Plan Sportsmanship Summits

  • Support leadership initiatives

  • Participate in MHSAA championship events, including medal ceremonies

They also attend a 24-hour leadership camp and collaborate with student-athletes from across Michigan.

Important Deadline

Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on April 20. Students can download the application from the MHSAA website and submit it via email, fax or mail.

Selected applicants will be notified by May 1.

Why This Matters for Student-Athletes

For high school athletes — including football, basketball and multi-sport competitors — the Student Advisory Council offers a chance to:

  • Build leadership skills

  • Represent your school and community

  • Have a voice in shaping the direction of high school sports in Michigan
