DETROIT — Twelve years of frustration came to an end Saturday night at Ford Field.

Brother Rice defeated longtime rival Detroit Catholic Central 31–25 in overtime on October 24, capturing the 2026 Prep Bowl Championship in a dramatic finish that saw Deondre Hill deliver the game-winning touchdown.

The victory marked Brother Rice’s first win over Catholic Central since 2014, ending a lengthy drought against one of its biggest rivals.

For the Warriors, it was more than another championship. It was an opportunity to rewrite the recent history of a rivalry that had consistently favored the Shamrocks.

And when the game reached its defining moment, Brother Rice found a way to finish.

A Back-and-Forth Battle From the Opening Kickoff

Brother Rice wasted little time making its presence felt.

A strong opening kickoff return gave the Warriors excellent field position deep in Catholic Central territory. Brother Rice capitalized with a rushing touchdown, taking an early 6–0 lead.

Catholic Central responded immediately.

The Shamrocks delivered an impressive kickoff return of their own before finding the end zone to take a 7–6 advantage.

Both defenses settled in as the opening quarter progressed, with Catholic Central carrying its one-point lead into the second quarter.

Brother Rice regained control before halftime.

Another rushing touchdown put the Warriors ahead 12–7 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion. The defense followed with a critical sack and an interception off a tipped pass, preventing Catholic Central from building momentum.

Brother Rice entered halftime holding a 12–7 advantage.

Catholic Central Responds Behind Jaafar and Gash

Despite playing without starting quarterback Duke Banta, Catholic Central refused to back down.

The Shamrocks opened the second half with renewed energy, leaning on Ryan Jaafar to move the football.

Jaafar delivered several physical runs that helped push Catholic Central into scoring position.

Gideon Gash finished the drive with a jet-sweep touchdown, and a successful two-point conversion gave the Shamrocks a 15–12 lead.

But Brother Rice had an answer.

The Warriors put together a sustained offensive possession, advancing inside Catholic Central’s five-yard line.

Hill finished the drive with a rushing touchdown from the two-yard line, putting Brother Rice back in front 19–15.

The championship was far from decided.

Fourth-Quarter Drama Sends Championship Into Overtime

Catholic Central continued battling in the fourth quarter.

A crucial fourth-and-one conversion helped extend a Shamrocks possession, eventually leading to another touchdown and a 22–19 advantage.

Brother Rice responded with an explosive passing play that set up another short-yardage touchdown, reclaiming the lead at 25–22.

With just over a minute remaining, Catholic Central faced one final opportunity to keep its championship hopes alive.

The Shamrocks moved downfield behind a combination of quarterback runs and timely completions, including a significant gain involving Gash.

After an incomplete pass on third-and-nine, Catholic Central turned to its kicking game.

The field-goal attempt was successful.

25–25. Overtime.

After four quarters of momentum swings, neither team had managed to separate itself.

The championship would be decided by one final sequence.

Deondre Hill Delivers the Championship-Winning Touchdown

Catholic Central received the first offensive possession of overtime.

The Shamrocks advanced to the one-yard line but were unable to score, giving Brother Rice an opportunity to win the championship with a touchdown.

The Warriors initially appeared to have their winning score through the air, but a penalty erased the play.

Another penalty, this time pass interference against Catholic Central, gave Brother Rice a fresh opportunity.

Hill took advantage.

The Brother Rice running back powered into the end zone, completing the Warriors’ 31–25 overtime victory and setting off a championship celebration at Ford Field.

For Hill, it was the defining moment of an unforgettable night.

For Brother Rice, it was the touchdown that ended 12 years of frustration against Catholic Central.

A Statement Victory for Brother Rice

Saturday’s championship carried significance beyond the final score.

Brother Rice demonstrated resilience throughout a game that featured multiple lead changes, critical defensive stops and pressure-filled offensive possessions.

Each time Catholic Central appeared to seize control, the Warriors responded.

Hill’s performance proved especially important, with his rushing touchdowns helping Brother Rice remain competitive before his decisive overtime score.

Catholic Central deserves credit for its effort.

Without Banta directing the offense, the Shamrocks still managed to generate scoring opportunities behind Jaafar, Gash and a determined offensive unit.

Their late fourth-quarter drive demonstrated the composure that has helped establish Catholic Central as one of Michigan’s premier football programs.

But on this particular night, Brother Rice had the final answer.

DVS Analysis: A Rivalry Win That Changes the Conversation

Rivalry games carry a different level of importance, especially when one program has controlled the series for more than a decade.

For Brother Rice, defeating Catholic Central was about more than capturing a Prep Bowl trophy.

It was about proving the Warriors could overcome a program that had repeatedly stood in their way.

The most impressive part of Brother Rice’s performance wasn’t simply the game-winning touchdown.

It was the Warriors’ ability to respond under pressure.

They surrendered multiple leads, watched Catholic Central force overtime and had an apparent winning touchdown erased by a penalty.

Still, Brother Rice finished the job.

Hill deserves recognition for delivering when the championship was on the line, but this was a team victory built on persistence.

As the MHSAA postseason approaches, Brother Rice enters the playoffs with something every championship contender wants: confidence earned against a quality opponent.

And after 12 years, the Warriors can finally say they defeated Detroit Catholic Central again.
