Miracle in Oak Park: Groves Wins 20–18 on Last-Second Hail Mary
OAK PARK — Six seconds. One final play. One unforgettable finish.
Birmingham Groves pulled off a stunning 20–18 victory over Oak Park Friday night when quarterback Ayrton Zeile launched a Hail Mary toward the end zone that was tipped in traffic and caught by Sherman Christian for the game-winning touchdown.
It was the final twist in a game filled with defensive stands, penalties, turnovers, trick plays and dramatic momentum swings.
Groves Takes the Early Lead
Groves struck first behind Jeremiah Whitley, who found the end zone to give the Falcons an early 7–0 advantage.
Oak Park struggled to establish offensive momentum early but eventually answered. No. 6 scored the Knights’ first touchdown, cutting the deficit to one.
Groves then made a critical special-teams play, blocking the extra-point attempt to preserve a 7–6 lead.
But on the ensuing kickoff, the Falcons gave the momentum right back.
Groves fumbled the return and Oak Park recovered, giving the Knights an immediate opportunity to take their first lead.
Oak Park eventually worked its way into a first-and-goal situation, but penalties became costly. The Knights appeared to reach the end zone twice during the possession, only for both scores to be erased.
Groves survived the threat without allowing another point.
The Falcons encountered penalty problems of their own late in the second quarter, with multiple false starts pushing the offense backward as the clock wound down.
Despite opportunities on both sides, Groves carried a 7–6 lead into halftime.
Groves Reaches Into the Playbook
With Oak Park’s defense paying significant attention to Whitley and the Groves rushing attack, the Falcons used that aggression against the Knights in the second half.
Groves dialed up a flea-flicker, catching Oak Park’s defense off guard and connecting for a touchdown.
The score extended the Falcons’ advantage to 14–6.
Oak Park refused to go away.
The Knights continued battling through a physical second half and eventually found the end zone again, with No. 21 scoring Oak Park’s second touchdown of the night.
Then came the play that appeared to have completed the comeback.
Late in the fourth quarter, Oak Park connected on a deep touchdown pass, giving the Knights an 18–14 lead.
The ensuing two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
That left Groves down four—and ultimately left the door open for what came next.
Six Seconds. One Last Chance.
Groves struggled to generate much on its final possession, but the Falcons managed to advance the football to around midfield.
Only six seconds remained.
There was enough time for one final shot.
Zeile took the snap and launched the football toward the end zone.
The pass came down among a crowd of players and was tipped into the air.
Christian was there.
The Groves receiver secured the deflection for the touchdown, completing an improbable last-second comeback and giving the Falcons a 20–18 victory.
A game Oak Park appeared to have won seconds earlier suddenly belonged to Groves.
A Wild Friday Night Finish
The final play will be remembered, but Groves’ victory came down to several moments throughout the night.
A blocked extra point kept an early Oak Park touchdown from tying the game. The Falcons survived a first-and-goal possession in which penalties wiped away Oak Park scoring opportunities. A perfectly timed flea-flicker helped Groves create separation in the second half.
And when Oak Park eventually fought back and took the lead, Groves still had one opportunity remaining.
Six seconds became all the Falcons needed.
Zeile gave his team one final chance.
The football was tipped.
And Christian finished the job.
FINAL: Birmingham Groves 20, Oak Park 18
