$2,000 Scholarship Opportunity Opens for Michigan High School Student-Athletes
Michigan high school seniors who have excelled both in the classroom and in athletics have an opportunity to earn some extra help toward college.
Applications are now open for the 2026-27 MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Awards, which will provide 32 student-athletes with $2,000 scholarships.
The program, now in its 38th year, recognizes student-athletes for achievement and leadership in athletics, academics and other activities. More than $1 million in scholarships has been awarded through the program since its creation in 1988-89.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, students must be graduating during the 2026-27 school year, have an unrounded GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and have earned a varsity letter in a sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament.
That includes football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, track and field, competitive cheer, wrestling, baseball, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, lacrosse and several other MHSAA sports.
The opportunity isn’t based solely on athletic performance. Applicants are also asked to detail their extracurricular activities and leadership accomplishments, answer two short-response questions and write a 500-word essay about the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics. Two letters of recommendation are also required.
32 Student-Athletes Will Receive Scholarships
Thirty scholarships are distributed based on school classification, with boys and girls selected from Classes A through D. Two additional scholarships will be awarded at-large to minority applicants regardless of school size.
Schools have limits on how many applicants ultimately can be considered based on classification, although the MHSAA says additional students may initially submit applications.
How to Apply
Interested student-athletes should contact their school’s athletic director to obtain the access code required to begin the application process.
Applications must be submitted online by 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. The MHSAA expects to announce 120 finalists in late January, followed by the 32 scholarship winners throughout February. Winners will be honored during the 2027 MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals at the Breslin Student Events Center.
