PSL Gold Race Comes Down to a Crucial Two-Night Stretch
DETROIT — The race for a spot in the PSL Gold Division championship is coming down to two games on consecutive nights, with Denby, Detroit Central and Cody all having something at stake.
Denby currently sits atop the division, while Central and Cody remain in the hunt behind them. This week could provide some much-needed clarity.
The action begins Wednesday, October 8, when Cody hosts Frederick Douglass. Cody needs to take care of business to keep itself firmly in the championship picture.
Then all eyes turn to Thursday.
Denby and Central meet October 9 in a matchup with major implications for the PSL Gold race.
Head-to-Head Results Could Loom Large
What makes the race particularly interesting is what has already happened between the three contenders.
Denby defeated Cody 12–6 earlier this season, giving Denby a head-to-head victory over one of the teams chasing it.
Cody, however, owns an important result of its own: a 14–12 victory over Central.
That creates an intriguing chain heading into the final stretch:
Denby beat Cody. Cody beat Central. Central still has its shot at Denby.
If Cody defeats Douglass Wednesday and Denby follows by beating Central Thursday, Cody’s head-to-head victory over Central could become significant if the two finish tied in the division standings.
That scenario could potentially set up a Denby-Cody rematch for the PSL Gold championship, although the PSL’s official tiebreaking procedure would determine the final championship participants in the event of a tie.
Central Can Change Everything
Central doesn’t have to sit back and watch the other scenarios unfold.
A victory over Denby would change the complexion of the race entirely and potentially create a much more complicated situation at the top of the division.
That makes Thursday’s matchup one of the biggest remaining games on the PSL schedule.
Denby has already beaten Cody.
Cody has already beaten Central.
Now Central gets its opportunity against Denby.
By the end of Thursday night, the road to the PSL Gold Division championship could look much clearer.
Detroit Varsity Sports will continue tracking the PSL championship picture as the final results come in.
