BACK ON TOP! Farmington Hills Mercy Reclaims No. 1 Ranking as Michigan Volleyball Playoffs Approach
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — The battle for the top spot in Michigan high school volleyball has taken another turn, and Farmington Hills Mercy is back at No. 1.
The defending Division 1 state champion Marlins reclaimed the top position in the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) Week 9 rankings released Tuesday, October 20, moving ahead of Catholic League rival Bloomfield Hills Marian.
The latest shakeup comes just one week after Marian defeated Mercy in the Catholic High School League tournament championship to take over the top ranking.
Now, with the MHSAA postseason approaching, the two Metro Detroit powerhouses once again occupy the top two spots in Division 1.
Mercy and Marian Continue Their Battle for No. 1
Mercy entered the season as Michigan’s top-ranked Division 1 team and held that position through the opening seven weeks.
However, losses to South Lyon East and Marian created an opening in the rankings.
Marian capitalized, defeating Mercy in four sets to claim the Catholic League tournament championship and move into the No. 1 position in Week 8.
The Mustangs’ stay at the top lasted just one week.
Marian saw its 21-match winning streak snapped in a two-set loss to Forest Hills Northern at the Beast of the East tournament over the weekend.
That result helped open the door for Mercy to return to No. 1 in the latest coaches poll.
The two programs have established themselves as leading Division 1 championship contenders, and their back-and-forth battle adds another layer of intrigue to the upcoming postseason.
Metro Detroit Well Represented in Division 1
Mercy and Marian aren’t the only local teams making noise.
South Lyon East climbed to No. 4 in the latest rankings, while Utica Eisenhower moved up two positions to No. 5.
Clarkston remains among the state’s top programs at No. 9, and Romeo made its first appearance in the Division 1 top 10 this season.
The Bulldogs entered at No. 10 following an impressive stretch that included victories over Byron Center, Utica Eisenhower and East Grand Rapids.
With six Metro Detroit-area programs ranked in the Division 1 top 10, the region has positioned itself to play a significant role in the state championship race.
Country Day, Lutheran North Among Division 2 Contenders
Metro Detroit’s presence extends beyond Division 1.
Two-time defending Division 2 state champion Detroit Country Day remains ranked No. 2, trailing only Grand Rapids Christian.
Macomb Lutheran North climbed two spots to No. 4 after pushing Country Day to five sets in a competitive matchup.
Dearborn Divine Child also entered the Division 2 top 10 at No. 10.
In Division 3, Plymouth Christian Academy holds the No. 3 position, while Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central ranks eighth.
Auburn Hills Oakland Christian rounds out the local spotlight after climbing to No. 5 in Division 4.
The Postseason Is Almost Here
With the MHSAA volleyball tournament less than two weeks away, the latest rankings offer a glimpse at the programs positioned to make deep postseason runs.
For Mercy, reclaiming the top ranking is another reminder of the Marlins’ championship credentials.
For Marian, the challenge is responding after losing the No. 1 spot.
And for teams such as South Lyon East, Eisenhower, Clarkston and Romeo, the opportunity remains to disrupt the championship picture.
One thing is clear: Metro Detroit will have plenty of teams worth watching when postseason volleyball begins.
