Cass Tech Set for $6.8 Million Transformation of Historic Athletic Field
DETROIT — One of Detroit high school football’s most recognizable home fields is getting a major makeover.
Detroit Public Schools Community District is moving forward with a $6.799 million renovation of Cass Technical High School’s athletic field, a project that will replace the Technicians’ natural-grass playing surface with a regulation-sized synthetic multi-sport turf field and significantly modernize the stadium.
The project goes well beyond installing turf.
According to DPSCD, improvements include the relocation and expansion of the visitor bleachers, a new scoreboard, upgraded sound system, new field lighting, fencing renovations, pedestrian paving improvements, a new school marquee sign and minor renovations to the locker room and concession building.
Construction documents also call for a new field drainage system and shock pad beneath the synthetic turf, important upgrades for a facility that will ultimately support multiple sports.
A New Home Field for One of Detroit’s Premier Programs
The timing comes as Cass Tech football continues to establish itself among Michigan’s premier programs.
The Technicians improved to 6-0 Friday night with a 65-0 victory over Western International, their fourth shutout through six games. Cass has outscored its opponents 293-28 this season, including its 20-7 rivalry victory over Detroit King.
Yet while Cass has built a championship-caliber program, its home facility has maintained an old-school feel with a natural-grass surface in the middle of downtown Detroit.
That is about to change.
DPSCD’s current construction schedule calls for planning and procurement during the opening months of 2027, with construction scheduled from March 31 through August 13, 2027. The district officially lists the overall project for Fall 2027 completion.
If that construction timeline holds, the Technicians could enter the 2027 football season on an entirely transformed home field.
Part of a Bigger Detroit Investment
Cass Tech isn’t the only Detroit school receiving upgrades.
DPSCD announced a $34 million investment in athletic fields and swimming facilities across 11 schools, separate from the district’s larger $700 million Facilities Master Plan. Central, Denby, Henry Ford and Southeastern are among the schools slated for athletic-field improvements.
For Cass Tech, though, the transformation will be especially visible.
The downtown skyline will remain behind the stadium. The Technicians will still call Second Avenue home.
But the field beneath them is about to look very different.
