Gideon Gash Delivers as Detroit Catholic Central Defeats Toledo Central Catholic, 31–12
NOVI — Detroit Catholic Central remained unbeaten with a 31–12 victory over Toledo Central Catholic, using a fast start, a disruptive defense and two touchdowns from Gideon Gash to take control of the matchup.
Gash delivered two of the biggest plays of the night, returning a punt for a touchdown before adding a toe-tap touchdown reception near the sideline in the fourth quarter.
The Shamrocks also had to adjust after starting quarterback Duke Banta exited late in the first half and did not return.
DCC Takes Control Early
Banta opened the scoring for Detroit Catholic Central with a quarterback touchdown run. The Shamrocks converted the two-point attempt to take an 8–0 first-quarter lead.
Toledo Central Catholic struggled to establish momentum early.
A mishandled snap disrupted one possession before a tipped pass on another drive resulted in a DCC interception. The Shamrocks capitalized on the turnover, eventually connecting on a touchdown pass between two defenders to extend the lead to 14–0 after an unsuccessful two-point attempt.
The mistakes continued to hurt the Fighting Irish.
Another bad snap resulted in a fumble recovered by DCC. The ensuing possession carried into the second quarter, where the Shamrocks added a field goal to make it 17–0.
Gash Makes His First Big Play
Detroit Catholic Central’s defense continued to control the game, recording tackles for loss on consecutive Toledo Central Catholic running plays and eventually forcing a punt.
That gave Gash an opportunity to make an impact on special teams.
Gash fielded the punt and took it back for a touchdown, stretching DCC’s advantage to 24–0.
Toledo Central Catholic’s sideline protested the play, arguing that holding should have been called during the return, but the touchdown stood.
The Fighting Irish responded with one of their best offensive possessions of the first half, putting together several strong runs before connecting on a touchdown pass along the sideline.
Their two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving DCC ahead 24–6.
Banta Exits Before Halftime
Late in the second quarter, Banta was shaken up at the end of a scramble.
The DCC quarterback was able to walk off the field under his own power but did not return for the remainder of the game.
Toledo Central Catholic attempted to capitalize before halftime.
A contested reception by No. 17 moved the Fighting Irish into the red zone, but the Shamrocks’ defense responded with another stand, forcing a turnover on downs.
DCC took a knee to close the half with a 24–6 advantage.
Shamrocks Adjust Without Banta
With their starting quarterback sidelined, the Shamrocks leaned more heavily on their running game while allowing their defense to protect the lead.
DCC continued to make life difficult for Toledo Central Catholic, generating pressure in the backfield and preventing the Fighting Irish from putting together the type of sustained comeback they needed.
Then Gash delivered again.
Gash Gets the Foot Down
In the fourth quarter, Detroit Catholic Central put together a drive featuring multiple first downs before finding Gash near the boundary for a touchdown.
The catch was close.
Gash secured the pass near the sideline and got his foot down in bounds for the score, extending DCC’s lead to 31–6.
Toledo Central Catholic’s sideline immediately disputed the ruling, arguing that Gash had come down out of bounds.
But the touchdown stood — and DVS footage of the play provided a clear look at Gash getting his foot down in bounds.
It was Gash’s second touchdown of the night and another major contribution after his earlier punt return.
DCC Defense Closes It Out
Toledo Central Catholic answered with a big passing play for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 31–12, but DCC’s defense prevented the Fighting Irish from getting any closer.
The Shamrocks recorded multiple sacks down the stretch, while a holding penalty erased a sizable Toledo Central Catholic completion.
DCC later intercepted another tipped pass on third-and-15, delivering another key stop as Toledo Central Catholic attempted to rally.
From there, the Shamrocks finished the job.

Gash supplied two of the defining moments — first with his punt-return touchdown and later with the toe-tap touchdown catch that DVS captured from the sideline.
The result was a 31–12 DCC victory and another win for the unbeaten Shamrocks.
