PSL Championship Race Tightens as King–East English Headlines Crucial Final Two Weeks
The road to Ford Field is about to get much clearer.
With two weeks remaining in the Detroit Public School League regular season, Cass Tech controls the race for one spot in the PSL Football Championship. The battle for the other remains wide open between Detroit King, East English Village and Southeastern.
All three contenders enter Friday’s action with identical records: 4–1 overall and 2–1 in PSL Blue Division play.
That makes Friday’s matchup between King and East English one of the most important games remaining on the league schedule.
The winner will move to 3–1 in division play and remain firmly in contention for the PSL Championship, scheduled for Friday, October 16, at Ford Field. The losing team would need significant help during the final week to remain in the race.
Cass Tech Controls Its Path
Cass Tech enters Week 6 undefeated at 5–0 overall and 3–0 in the PSL.
The Technicians already own victories over Southeastern, Mumford and King, including a 20–7 rivalry win over the Crusaders on September 25. Cass Tech faces Western International on Friday before completing division play against Renaissance on October 9.
With wins in its final two league games, Cass Tech would finish undefeated in the division and secure its place at Ford Field.
The defending Division 1 state runner-up has controlled the PSL race with a defense that has allowed only seven points across its first three league games.
King and East English Meet With Little Room for Error
King rebounded from an early nonconference challenge to enter Friday at 4–1, with its only loss coming against Cass Tech.
The Crusaders opened the season with a victory over Michigan City before winning a 44–42 triple-overtime thriller against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. King then recorded dominant league victories over Renaissance and Henry Ford before falling to the Technicians.
East English has also put together a 4–1 start.
The Bulldogs opened the season with four consecutive victories, including a 26–20 win over Flint Powers Catholic. Their only defeat came against Southeastern, which earned a 6–0 defensive victory on September 18.
East English responded by defeating Henry Ford 38–6, keeping the Bulldogs directly in the championship race.
Friday’s winner will improve to 3–1 in PSL play, but the result will not completely settle the second championship berth.
Southeastern Remains a Major Factor
Southeastern cannot be overlooked.
The Jungaleers are also 4–1 overall and 2–1 in the division. Their victory over East English gives them an important head-to-head advantage if the teams finish tied.
Southeastern faces Henry Ford on Friday before meeting King in the final week of division play.
If King defeats East English, the October 9 matchup between King and Southeastern could effectively become a play-in game for Ford Field.
If East English wins Friday, the Bulldogs would still need to defeat Mumford in their division finale—and likely need King to defeat Southeastern—to avoid losing a potential tiebreaker to the Jungaleers.
That creates several possible paths to the championship:
A King win over East English would set up a potentially decisive matchup with Southeastern.
An East English win would keep the Bulldogs alive but make the King–Southeastern result equally important.
Southeastern could strengthen its position by winning its final two division games.
Cass Tech can remove all uncertainty surrounding its berth by remaining undefeated in PSL play.
Ford Field Awaits
The 2026 DPS Football Championship is scheduled for Friday, October 16, at Ford Field. The complete lineup, participating teams and kickoff times have not yet been officially announced.
Those details should become clear following the final PSL regular-season games on October 9.
Until then, every result matters.
Cass Tech controls the front of the race, but King, East English and Southeastern enter the final two weeks separated by nothing in the standings. Friday’s King–East English matchup is the first major test in determining which program will earn the opportunity to play for the city championship at Ford Field.
