Monroe Public Schools has placed its athletic director on paid administrative leave following comments he made during a recent podcast appearance that addressed a Title IX complaint and the participation of a transgender athlete in a high school volleyball match.

The district confirmed Monday that Dr. Chet Hesson, the district’s athletic director, was placed on leave after appearing on a podcast without authorization from Monroe Public Schools. District officials said the comments made during the interview do not represent the views or policies of the school district.

In a statement released by the district, Monroe Public Schools said it is reviewing the matter internally and will not comment further until that process is complete.

The podcast discussion centered on a Title IX complaint filed by a Monroe-area parent, whose daughter competed against a transgender athlete during a volleyball match earlier this season. The opposing athlete attends Ann Arbor Skyline High School, which is part of the Ann Arbor Public Schools district.

The complaint alleges that allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls sports creates an unfair competitive environment. The issue has drawn statewide attention as similar debates continue across the country regarding participation policies in high school athletics.

According to Monroe Public Schools, Hesson’s participation in the podcast interview was not approved by the district. Officials emphasized that while employees are entitled to personal opinions, public comments made in an official capacity must align with district communication protocols.

At this time, no timeline has been announced for the conclusion of the district’s review or for Hesson’s potential return to his position.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has previously stated that it follows state and federal laws regarding student eligibility and inclusion. MHSAA policies currently allow transgender students to participate in athletics consistent with their gender identity, subject to review on a case-by-case basis.

The situation remains under review, and no additional disciplinary actions have been announced.
