One More Shot: Detroit King Seeks Redemption Against Cass Tech in PSL Championship Rematch

DETROIT, Mich. — Some rivalries are defined by history. Others are defined by moments that players and coaches remember long after the final whistle.

For Detroit King, its latest meeting with Cass Tech provided one of those moments.

On September 25, the Crusaders entered their matchup with the Technicians undefeated, looking to make a statement against one of Michigan's premier football programs.

For much of the afternoon, King appeared ready to do exactly that.

The Crusaders took a 7–0 halftime lead and put themselves in position to hand Cass Tech its first defeat of the season.

But the Technicians responded with 20 unanswered points, turning King's promising start into a 20–7 loss.

Now, less than a month later, the two Detroit football powers are preparing to meet again.

This time, a Public School League Blue Division championship will be on the line at Ford Field.

And for King, the opportunity is about more than avenging a loss. It's about proving that the Crusaders can finish what they started.

A rivalry built on championship expectations

Detroit King and Cass Tech have spent years helping define the standard of high school football in the city.

Both programs have developed talented players, produced college prospects and competed on some of Michigan's biggest stages.

When the two meet, the stakes extend beyond the standings.

For King, wearing the Crusaders uniform comes with expectations of its own. The program has built a championship tradition, and games against Cass Tech provide an opportunity to measure itself against another established powerhouse.

The September meeting offered a glimpse of what King is capable of.

The challenge now is putting together a complete four-quarter performance.

The first meeting: A missed opportunity

King's defense made life difficult for Cass Tech early in the September 25 contest.

The Crusaders held the Technicians scoreless throughout the first half, while their offense capitalized on an opportunity to take the lead.

Quarterback Darryl Flemister III connected with De'Andre Williams for a touchdown, giving King a 7–0 advantage at halftime.

But the momentum shifted after the break.

Cass Tech quarterback Donald Tabron II found Bryce Graham for the tying touchdown in the third quarter.

In the fourth, running back Julian Taylor broke free for a 47-yard touchdown, putting the Technicians ahead.

King's offense struggled to regain its rhythm as turnovers became a deciding factor. Cass Tech forced five turnovers, including a late interception that helped set up another Taylor touchdown.

The final score was 20–7.

For King, the result offered a difficult lesson: controlling portions of a rivalry game isn't enough when the opponent has the ability to capitalize on mistakes.

A second opportunity on a bigger stage

Friday's championship game gives the Crusaders a rare opportunity to face the same opponent with a title at stake.

King knows it can challenge Cass Tech defensively. The first meeting proved that.

But the Crusaders will need more consistency offensively, particularly after halftime, to reverse the result.

Protecting the football will also be essential.

Five turnovers against a team as explosive as Cass Tech can quickly erase the benefits of a strong defensive performance.

For King, the championship formula begins with building on what worked in September while correcting the mistakes that allowed the Technicians to take control.

More than a rematch

There is something different about a championship game at Ford Field.

For the players, it represents an opportunity to compete on the same field as the Detroit Lions, with a city championship at stake.

For the programs, it's another chapter in a rivalry that has helped shape Detroit high school football.

And for King, Friday presents a chance to write a different ending.

The Crusaders don't need to be reminded of what happened the first time.

They experienced it.

Now comes the opportunity to show what they've learned.

One opponent. One more opportunity. One championship on the line.
