Road to Ford Field: Cass Tech Carries an Undefeated Season and Championship Expectations Into PSL Showdown

DETROIT, Mich. — At Cass Tech, winning comes with expectations. The Technicians have built a football tradition where competing for championships is part of the program's identity, and every new season presents another opportunity to uphold that standard.

Through seven games in 2026, Cass Tech has done exactly that.

The Technicians enter Friday's Detroit Public School League Blue Division championship undefeated at 7–0, having outscored their opponents 360–28. Their latest performance, a 67–0 victory over Renaissance on October 9, added another dominant result to an already impressive season.

But as Cass Tech prepares to face longtime rival Detroit King at Ford Field on October 16, the numbers tell only part of the story.

For a team that has rarely been tested this fall, the championship game presents an opportunity to prove its dominance against an opponent that knows it can compete.

Built on expectations

Under head coach Marvin Rushing, Cass Tech has continued to establish itself among Michigan's top Division 1 programs.

The Technicians reached the MHSAA Division 1 state championship game in each of the previous two seasons, reinforcing the expectations surrounding the program.

This year's team has demonstrated an impressive combination of offensive production and defensive consistency.

Cass Tech has scored at least 46 points in six of its seven games, including shutout victories over Michigan City, Southeastern, Mumford, Western International and Renaissance.

The one exception was perhaps its most revealing performance of the season.

Against Detroit King on September 25, the Technicians faced an early deficit and needed a second-half comeback to preserve their unbeaten record.

It was a reminder that championship-caliber teams must do more than dominate favorable matchups. They must also respond when the game becomes difficult.

The players driving the season

Donald Tabron II — Quarterback

The Texas A&M commit has emerged as one of Michigan's most recognizable young quarterbacks. Tabron's ability to lead the offense will be central to Cass Tech's championship hopes.

Julian Taylor — Running Back

Taylor delivered two fourth-quarter touchdown runs in the first meeting with King, including a 47-yard score that put Cass Tech ahead. His performance helped turn a close contest into a 20–7 victory.

Bryce Graham — Wide Receiver

Graham caught the game-tying touchdown from Tabron against King, helping spark Cass Tech's second-half comeback.

The game that tested Cass Tech

When Cass Tech and King met on September 25, both programs entered undefeated.

King struck first, taking a 7–0 lead into halftime behind a touchdown pass from Darryl Flemister III to De'Andre Williams.

For the first time in several weeks, Cass Tech found itself in a difficult position.

The Technicians responded with 20 unanswered points.

Tabron connected with Graham for the tying touchdown in the third quarter before Taylor broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Cass Tech's defense helped seal the victory, forcing five turnovers, including a late interception by Peyton Robinson that set up another Taylor touchdown.

The 20–7 victory was significant, not simply because Cass Tech defeated its biggest city rival, but because the Technicians demonstrated they could overcome adversity.

One more test before the postseason

Friday's championship game brings the rivalry to Ford Field, where the stakes will be considerably higher.

For Cass Tech, a victory would deliver another PSL Blue Division championship and keep its perfect season intact.

For King, the rematch offers a chance to reverse September's result and claim the city championship.

The Technicians enter as the unbeaten team, but their previous meeting demonstrated that the Crusaders are capable of making things uncomfortable.

And with the MHSAA playoffs approaching, Friday's contest could provide Cass Tech with another valuable test before the postseason.

The Technicians have spent the first seven games building their case as one of Michigan's top teams.

Now comes an opportunity to add another championship to that résumé.

At Cass Tech, the standard has already been established. Friday is another chance to live up to it.
