Seven Metro Detroit District Finals DVS Must Watch

Cass Tech–Fordson, King–Harper Woods and Clarkston–Grand Blanc headline a loaded second weekend of the MHSAA football playoffs.

The opening round is nearly complete, and several of Metro Detroit’s biggest district-final matchups are already set.

Unbeaten teams will be tested, community rivals will meet with championships at stake and Friday night’s biggest surprise will attempt to take down one of the state’s top programs.

MHSAA district finals are scheduled for November 6–7. Individual dates, kickoff times and host sites should be confirmed with the participating schools before making coverage or travel plans.

Here are seven matchups Detroit Varsity Sports will be watching.

1. Fordson vs. Cass Tech — Division 1

Fordson earned its place in the district final by defeating Belleville 28–14, avenging a regular-season loss and producing the biggest Metro Detroit surprise of the opening round.

Cass Tech had a much easier Friday night, defeating Plymouth 55–13 and improving to 10–0.

The Technicians enter as the favorite, but Fordson has already shown why expected outcomes mean very little once the playoffs begin.

This matchup features an unbeaten championship contender against a confident team coming off a statement victory. Fordson will need another outstanding defensive performance to challenge Cass Tech’s explosive offense.

DVS priority: Very high

2. Grand Blanc vs. Clarkston — Division 1

Grand Blanc remained undefeated with a 39–21 victory over Hartland, while Clarkston defeated Bloomfield Hills 49–14.

This may be the strongest Division 1 district final in Metro Detroit.

Grand Blanc enters at 10–0, but Clarkston carries extensive postseason experience and has consistently performed like one of the state’s premier programs.

The matchup should reveal whether Grand Blanc is ready to turn its undefeated regular season into a deep playoff run—or whether Clarkston’s championship experience will make the difference.

DVS priority: Very high

3. Oxford vs. Detroit Catholic Central — Division 1

Defending Division 1 champion Detroit Catholic Central opened its postseason with a 43–6 victory over Lake Orion.

Oxford advanced by defeating Davison 42–28.

Catholic Central remains one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament, but Oxford enters the district final after scoring 42 points against a quality opponent.

The Shamrocks are attempting to return to Ford Field and defend their championship. Oxford now has an opportunity to end that pursuit before the regional round.

DVS priority: High

4. North Farmington vs. Brother Rice — Division 2

Brother Rice continued its momentum by defeating Roseville 45–27.

North Farmington survived a much closer opener, escaping Ferndale with a 27–26 victory.

The Warriors are coming off consecutive emotional wins, including their overtime Prep Bowl victory over Detroit Catholic Central. North Farmington, however, enters after proving it can survive a one-point postseason battle.

Brother Rice will be favored, but the Raiders have already shown they are comfortable playing with their season on the line.

DVS priority: Very high

5. Detroit King vs. Harper Woods — Division 3

King defeated Grosse Pointe North 41–3. Harper Woods answered with a 50–8 victory over Warren Fitzgerald.

Neither program was seriously threatened in the opening round.

That makes this district final especially compelling. King brings championship tradition and a long history of postseason success. Harper Woods brings a talented program looking to strengthen its own place among Metro Detroit’s elite.

This is more than a Detroit-area matchup. It is a meeting between two legitimate Division 3 contenders, and one of them will be eliminated before the regional round.

DVS priority: Very high

6. South Lyon East vs. South Lyon — Division 2

South Lyon defeated Flushing 56–15, while South Lyon East advanced with a 38–20 victory over Saginaw Heritage.

Now the two community rivals will meet for a district championship.

Postseason rivalry games bring an entirely different atmosphere. Familiarity can reduce the importance of records and rankings because both programs understand exactly what the matchup means to their schools and community.

The winner will earn local bragging rights, a district trophy and a place in the regional round.

DVS priority: High

7. Rochester vs. Romeo — Division 1

Romeo improved to 10–0 with a 47–33 victory over Anchor Bay.

Rochester produced one of Friday’s most dramatic results, edging Dakota 22–21.

Romeo enters as the undefeated favorite, but Rochester has already survived a one-point elimination game. The Falcons will arrive knowing they can handle late-game playoff pressure.

For Romeo, the challenge is continuing a perfect season while the stakes increase every week.

DVS priority: High

DVS Analysis

The best assignment depends on what kind of story DVS wants to tell.

Cass Tech–Fordson offers the strongest headline after Fordson eliminated Belleville. King–Harper Woods provides a major Detroit-area matchup between two championship-caliber programs. Clarkston–Grand Blanc may be the best game on paper, while Brother Rice–North Farmington gives DVS an opportunity to continue following one of the region’s most recognizable programs.

If multiple crews are available, those four games should lead the assignment board.

The opening round removed several familiar names from the bracket. The district finals will determine which teams are genuine state-title threats—and which promising seasons end before the road reaches the regional round.
