SURVIVE AND ADVANCE: Metro Detroit’s Road to Ford Field Begins Friday

DETROIT, Mich. — The wait is over. The road to Ford Field officially begins Friday as Metro Detroit high school football programs enter the 2026 Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs.

After nine weeks of regular-season competition, teams across the region now face a different challenge: win or go home.

The opening round features undefeated contenders, traditional powers, difficult road assignments and several matchups that could immediately reshape the championship picture.

For programs with championship aspirations, there is no time to ease into the postseason.

Metro Detroit’s Must-Watch Matchups

Several regional games deserve special attention as the postseason begins.

Detroit Cass Tech (9-0) vs. Plymouth (4-5) — Division 1

Cass Tech enters the postseason undefeated and will host Plymouth in a Division 1 district semifinal. The Technicians have established themselves as one of the region’s strongest programs and begin their championship pursuit at home.

Clarkston (8-1) vs. Bloomfield Hills (5-4) — Division 1

An Oakland County matchup brings together two familiar programs. Clarkston enters with an impressive 8-1 record, but playoff football leaves little room for overlooking an opponent.

Detroit Catholic Central (8-1) vs. Lake Orion (4-5) — Division 1

Catholic Central begins its postseason against Lake Orion. The Shamrocks will be looking to respond after their regular-season overtime loss to Brother Rice and put together a championship-caliber playoff run.

Romeo (9-0) vs. Anchor Bay (5-4) — Division 1

Romeo enters the playoffs unbeaten and will host a familiar Macomb County opponent. The Bulldogs have earned home-field advantage and now face the pressure of keeping their perfect season alive.

Brother Rice (7-2) vs. Roseville (4-5) — Division 2

Brother Rice enters the postseason with momentum after its memorable overtime victory over Detroit Catholic Central. The Warriors will host Roseville as they look to carry that performance into the playoffs.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (6-3) vs. Birmingham Groves (5-4) — Division 2

A compelling regional matchup features two programs with the talent and experience to make a postseason run. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s gets the home assignment.

Detroit King (6-3) vs. Grosse Pointe North (6-3) — Division 3

This matchup brings together two programs with identical regular-season records. Detroit King will host Grosse Pointe North in a game with significant postseason implications.

Harper Woods (7-2) vs. Warren Fitzgerald (6-3) — Division 3

Harper Woods opens at home against a Fitzgerald team that has demonstrated its ability to compete. This is another matchup that could produce a tightly contested playoff game.

The Road Ahead

The opening round is only the beginning.

For 11-player football, the tournament continues with district finals the weekend of November 6-7, followed by regional finals November 13-14 and state semifinals November 20-21.

The 11-player state championship games return to Ford Field in Detroit November 27-28.

Every team begins with the same objective, but only a select few will ultimately earn the opportunity to compete for a state championship.

DVS Take: This Is Where Legacies Are Built

The regular season establishes a team’s identity. The postseason determines how far that identity can carry it.

Metro Detroit has no shortage of championship contenders, established programs and teams capable of creating surprises.

Cass Tech’s undefeated season, Romeo’s perfect record, Clarkston’s Division 1 challenge and Brother Rice’s renewed momentum are just some of the storylines worth following.

But the biggest lesson of playoff football is simple: records do not guarantee anything once the ball is kicked off.

For some programs, Friday will be the beginning of a championship journey. For others, it will be the end of their season.

Survive and advance. The road to Ford Field starts now.
