The Road to Battle Creek: Metro Detroit Volleyball Teams to Watch in 2026
The postseason has arrived for Michigan high school volleyball, and Metro Detroit programs are preparing for the most important matches of the season.
The 2026 MHSAA district tournaments run November 2–7, with regional play scheduled for November 10 and 12. From there, teams will advance to the quarterfinals on November 17 and the state finals at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek on November 21.
For the programs still chasing a championship, the margin for error is shrinking.
Five Programs to Keep on Your Radar
Bloomfield Hills Marian
Marian has been one of Michigan’s leading Division 1 programs this season. The Mustangs captured the Catholic High School League Tournament title earlier in October and were ranked No. 1 in Division 1 in the MHSAA’s October 14 report.
Farmington Hills Mercy
Mercy has also been among the state’s top Division 1 contenders. The Marlins and Marian have already faced each other multiple times this season, adding another layer of intrigue to the postseason picture.
Clarkston
Clarkston has spent much of the season among the leading Division 1 teams. The Wolves were listed at 20–2 in the MHSAA’s October 14 report, with their only losses at that point coming against Marian and Mercy.
South Lyon East
South Lyon East has demonstrated that it can compete with the area’s best. The Cougars defeated Mercy in three sets earlier in October, according to the MHSAA’s weekly volleyball report, providing evidence of their potential against elite competition.
Bloomfield Hills
Bloomfield Hills is another program worth following. In its October 21 report, the MHSAA noted the Black Hawks’ 28–9 record and their victory over Division 2 contender Detroit Country Day.
These are teams to watch, not an official ranking by Detroit Varsity Sports. Records and rankings reflect the MHSAA reports cited below and may have changed since publication.
What Will Decide the Postseason?
Tournament volleyball often comes down to execution under pressure. Serving, defensive communication, limiting unforced errors and finishing important points can separate a team advancing to the next round from one whose season ends.
The district tournament also creates opportunities for programs to make a statement. Teams that have battled through difficult regular-season schedules will now have the chance to demonstrate what they can accomplish when every match is an elimination game.
The Destination: Battle Creek
The journey begins with district play November 2–7. Regional matches follow November 10 and 12, followed by quarterfinals November 17.
The state semifinals are scheduled for November 19–20, with the championship matches on November 21 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
For Metro Detroit’s volleyball programs, the goal is simple: keep winning and earn the opportunity to compete for a state title.
Football may dominate the fall sports conversation, but volleyball deserves its own spotlight as these athletes enter the postseason.
