Muskegon battled back from an early deficit to defeat Detroit Renaissance 34–29 at the Breslin Center, capturing the MHSAA Division 1 Girls Basketball State Championship in a gritty, defensive showdown.

After scoring just two points in the first quarter, the Big Reds responded with toughness, defense, and clutch execution down the stretch to complete the comeback.

1st Quarter – Renaissance Dominates Early

Both teams struggled to find rhythm offensively early, but #22 Jaebri’an Autry gave Detroit Renaissance a spark.

Autry scored the game’s first points and quickly took over, finishing the quarter with 9 points, accounting for all of Renaissance’s offense.

Muskegon struggled with turnovers and couldn’t find their rhythm, scoring just one basket late in the quarter from #10 Mariah Sain.

Renaissance closed the first quarter in control, leading 12–2.

2nd Quarter – Momentum Begins to Shift

Detroit Renaissance extended their lead early in the second quarter after #2 Zahra Richardson knocked down a three, but Muskegon slowly began to find life.

After defensive adjustments, the Big Reds started to tighten up, forcing turnovers and turning defense into offense.

A key stretch featuring a basket from #4 Camiyah Bonner and a three-pointer from Mariah Sain cut the deficit to 15–12.

By halftime, Muskegon had seized momentum despite trailing 17–12, with their crowd fully back in the game.

3rd Quarter – Muskegon Closes the Gap

Muskegon continued to apply pressure in the third quarter, using traps and defensive intensity to disrupt Renaissance’s offense.

While Renaissance created turnovers, they struggled to convert those opportunities into points.

Muskegon steadily chipped away at the lead, cutting it to just one possession at 21–20 late in the quarter.

The Phoenix held a slim 21–20 lead heading into the final quarter, but momentum had clearly shifted.

4th Quarter – Big Reds Finish the Comeback

Muskegon completed the comeback early in the fourth, tying the game at 21 before both teams traded key possessions.

Mariah Sain (#10) began to take over, with 11 points, while Dy’Nasti Bell (#24) made a huge impact defensively and on the glass.

With under two minutes remaining, Bell was fouled and knocked down free throws to tie the game at 27–27.

Moments later, Muskegon took their first lead of the game, and from there, they never looked back.

Late free throws sealed the game as Muskegon closed it out 34–29, while their crowd erupted in celebration.

Final Thoughts

This game was a tale of two halves.

Detroit Renaissance controlled the early stages behind a dominant performance from Jaebri’an Autry, but Muskegon’s resilience, defense, and composure down the stretch proved to be the difference.

After a slow start, the Big Reds locked in defensively, executed in key moments, and delivered when it mattered most.
