Cass Tech Climbs to No. 2 in Michigan After Statement Win Over Detroit King
DETROIT — Cass Tech’s undefeated start is getting even more recognition.
Following Friday’s 20–7 victory over Detroit King, the Technicians have climbed to No. 2 in the latest High School On SI Michigan high school football Top 25, released Sept. 28. Only Detroit Catholic Central sits ahead of Cass Tech in the statewide ranking.
For the Technicians, the jump comes after arguably their biggest win of the season.
Cass Tech trailed King 7–0 at halftime Friday before completely changing the game after the break. The Technicians scored 20 unanswered points and forced five turnovers on their way to improving to 5–0.
Defense fuels Cass Tech’s rise
The final score only tells part of the story.
Cass Tech’s defense took control in the second half, holding King to negative rushing yardage after halftime, according to the rankings report.
Julian Taylor provided the offensive spark, scoring twice in the fourth quarter, including a 47-yard touchdown run that gave Cass Tech its first lead.
The performance was enough to move the Technicians directly behind DCC in the new rankings.
Metro Detroit dominates the top
Cass Tech isn’t alone near the top.
The latest rankings have:
No. 1 — Detroit Catholic Central
No. 2 — Cass Tech
No. 5 — Detroit King
No. 6 — Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
No. 7 — Clarkston
No. 14 — Harper Woods
No. 21 — Brother Rice
That gives Metro Detroit five of Michigan’s seven highest-ranked teams.
Could Cass Tech and King meet again?
Friday might not be the final chapter of this rivalry in 2026.
Cass Tech and King remain positioned for a potential PSL championship rematch at Ford Field in the coming weeks if both programs advance through the league schedule.
Cass Tech will first turn its attention to Western International, while King looks to rebound against East English Village Prep.
For now, however, the Technicians have another milestone to celebrate.
5–0. A rivalry win over King. And now the No. 2 ranking in Michigan.
