Detroit Catholic Central Takes No. 1 Spot From Cass Tech in Michigan High School Football Rankings
DETROIT, Mich. — There’s a new No. 1 team in Michigan high school football.
Detroit Catholic Central has moved into the top spot in the latest Detroit Free Press Super 25 rankings, released Sunday, October 11, overtaking previously top-ranked Detroit Cass Tech.
The change follows Catholic Central’s thrilling 27–20 comeback victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on Friday, October 9, one of the biggest games on the Metro Detroit football schedule.
Despite remaining undefeated at 7–0, Cass Tech slipped one position to No. 2.
Catholic Central Makes Its Statement
Catholic Central’s victory over St. Mary’s was more than another win on its schedule.
Facing a longtime Catholic League rival, the Shamrocks battled back to secure a seven-point victory and strengthen their case as one of Michigan’s premier teams.
The performance was enough to push Catholic Central ahead of Cass Tech in the latest rankings.
For the Shamrocks, the move to No. 1 reflects the strength of their season and their ability to deliver in a high-pressure rivalry matchup.
Cass Tech Remains Unbeaten
Although the Technicians dropped to No. 2, they have done little wrong on the field.
Cass Tech improved to 7–0 with a dominant 67–0 victory over Detroit Renaissance on Friday.
The Technicians have consistently overwhelmed opponents this season and remain one of the state’s strongest contenders heading toward the postseason.
Their next major test comes Friday, October 16, when they face Detroit King in the PSL Blue Division championship at Ford Field.
Cass Tech defeated King 20–7 during the regular season, but the championship rematch offers another opportunity for the Technicians to make a statement.
Metro Detroit Teams Continue to Rise
Catholic Central and Cass Tech aren’t the only Metro Detroit programs making moves in the Super 25.
Clarkston climbed to No. 5, while Detroit King moved up to No. 6, giving the upcoming PSL championship matchup even more significance.
With several local programs positioned near the top of the rankings, the road to a state championship could run through Metro Detroit.
Rankings Set the Stage for the Postseason
Rankings don’t determine championships, but they help tell the story of which programs are building momentum as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
Catholic Central now carries the No. 1 ranking, while Cass Tech has an opportunity to respond on the field in a championship atmosphere.
And with the MHSAA playoffs approaching, both programs will soon have the chance to prove themselves where it matters most.
Detroit Varsity Sports will continue following Michigan’s top high school football programs throughout the postseason.
