Marian Gets Its Revenge, Defeats Mercy to Capture CHSL Volleyball Championship
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Bloomfield Hills Marian picked the perfect time to turn the tables on one of its biggest rivals.
The Mustangs defeated Farmington Hills Mercy 3–1 on Saturday, October 10, capturing the Catholic High School League (CHSL) Bishop Division volleyball championship at Eastern Michigan University’s George Gervin GameAbove Center.
The victory delivered a championship for Marian and a measure of revenge against a Mercy program that had already defeated the Mustangs earlier this season.
A Different Result With a Championship on the Line
When Marian and Mercy met on September 9, the Marlins swept the Mustangs in straight sets.
Saturday’s championship meeting told a different story.
Marian reversed the earlier result, winning three sets to one to secure the Bishop Division crown.
The victory also extended the Mustangs’ winning streak to 18 consecutive matches, continuing an impressive stretch of volleyball as the season moves toward the state tournament.
With the win, Marian improved to 28–3, while Mercy moved to 29–6, according to results reported by MaxPreps.
Another Chapter in the Marian–Mercy Rivalry
Few rivalries carry the same weight in Metro Detroit girls volleyball as Marian and Mercy.
Both programs have established themselves among the area’s most recognizable volleyball powers, and their championship meeting added another chapter to that history.
For Marian, Saturday’s victory was particularly meaningful after its earlier defeat to the Marlins.
Mercy entered the championship with another strong season behind it, but the Mustangs delivered when the Bishop Division title was at stake.
Momentum Heading Toward the State Tournament
With the Catholic League championship secured, Marian will look to carry its momentum into the final stretch of the regular season and the upcoming MHSAA postseason.
The Mustangs’ 18-match winning streak provides plenty of reason for optimism, but the challenge ahead will be maintaining that level of play against the competition still to come.
For Mercy, the loss represents a setback rather than the end of its season. The Marlins remain a formidable program with an opportunity to regroup before postseason play.
Saturday belonged to Marian.
And after falling to Mercy earlier in the season, the Mustangs made sure the championship rematch ended differently.
Detroit Varsity Sports will continue following Metro Detroit girls volleyball as teams prepare for the MHSAA postseason.
