Brother Rice Pulls Away Late to Defeat Detroit Catholic Central, 60–49

One of the Catholic League’s premier rivalries delivered once again, as Brother Rice used second-half execution, defensive pressure, and timely runs to pull away from Detroit Catholic Central, securing a 60–49 victory Friday night.

The game featured momentum swings, physical defense, and emotional moments — everything expected from two programs that know each other well.

First Quarter — Shamrocks Strike First

Detroit Catholic Central came out firing, pushing the pace and knocking down shots from deep to grab an early advantage. The Shamrocks jumped out to an 16–8 lead, forcing Brother Rice into rushed possessions as DCC hunted perimeter looks.

After a timeout, Brother Rice settled in defensively, allowing just two points the rest of the quarter. A buzzer-beating three from Jordan McDaniels (#1) closed the gap, sending the game into the second quarter with DCC holding a slim 18–16 lead. Catholic Central finished the quarter 4-of-5 from three, clearly setting the tone early.

Second Quarter — Rice Responds

Brother Rice looked far more composed to open the second quarter, improving shot selection and locking in defensively. As they limited three-point attempts and increased ball pressure, momentum began to swing.

With the score tied at 25–25, the energy in the gym shifted. Detroit Catholic Central continued to rely on ball movement, but Brother Rice’s defensive intensity made every possession difficult. The teams went into halftime tied at 27–27, setting up a wide-open second half.

Third Quarter — Momentum Shifts

The third quarter turned into a game of runs, and this time Brother Rice struck first. The Warriors controlled tempo, defended the perimeter, and converted in transition to build separation.

Behind strong defensive possessions and efficient offense, Brother Rice took a 43–38 lead into the fourth, beginning to impose their will on both ends of the floor.

Fourth Quarter — Warriors Close Strong

Brother Rice carried its momentum into the final frame, opening the quarter with fast-break points and defensive stops to extend the lead to 47–38.

From there, the Warriors put their foot on the gas. Defensive pressure continued to disrupt Catholic Central’s rhythm, and Brother Rice pushed the lead to 60–48, effectively sealing the game.

A major moment came when Greg Grays Jr. (#11) reached the 1,500-point milestone for his career, adding another chapter to an already impressive performance.

Detroit Catholic Central added a late bucket, but Brother Rice closed it out to secure the 60–49 rivalry win.
