Detroit Renaissance delivered a commanding performance in the MHSAA Girls Basketball Quarterfinals, defeating Dearborn 67–29 at Calihan Hall to punch their ticket to the Final Four.
From the opening tip, the Phoenix set the tone with defensive intensity, physical play in the paint, and efficient scoring that overwhelmed Dearborn on both ends of the floor.
1st Quarter – Renaissance Sets the Defensive Tone
Detroit Renaissance came out locked in defensively, applying pressure and forcing Dearborn into difficult shot attempts. Their ability to contest everything and control the tempo early allowed them to build a 10–5 lead after the first quarter.
2nd Quarter – Phoenix Take Full Control
The second quarter proved to be the turning point as Renaissance dominated the paint and capitalized on Dearborn turnovers. Their aggressive defense led to transition opportunities, while their interior scoring created consistent offense.
Renaissance also entered the bonus, taking advantage at the free-throw line to extend the lead to 37–14 heading into halftime.
3rd Quarter – Renaissance Breaks It Open
Detroit Renaissance came out of halftime with even more intensity, especially on the defensive end. Their pressure forced Dearborn to call an early timeout with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter as the game began to slip away.
#32 Jayla Adams led the way offensively, finishing the quarter as the game’s leading scorer with 13 points. Meanwhile, #3 Kassidy Kane caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down multiple three-pointers and adding 9 points in the quarter.
With their defense creating offense and their shooters heating up, Renaissance extended the lead to a commanding 56–22 heading into the fourth.
4th Quarter – Phoenix Finish Strong
Renaissance continued their dominance in the final quarter, showing no signs of slowing down. #1 Maria Walker began to find her rhythm offensively, adding to the Phoenix’s balanced attack.
Dearborn faced another setback when their leading scorer, #13 Zeinab Homayed, fouled out with over four minutes remaining, making the comeback even more unlikely.
With the game well out of reach, Renaissance went deeper into their bench while maintaining control. A late timeout with the score at 66–25 reflected the Phoenix’s complete dominance as they closed out the game with a 67–29 victory.
Final Thoughts
Detroit Renaissance showed why they are one of the top teams in the state, delivering a complete performance built on defense, physicality, and disciplined execution.
With contributions across the board and standout performances from Jayla Adams, Kassidy Kane, and Maria Walker, the Phoenix look poised for a deep run.
Detroit Renaissance now advances to the MHSAA Final Four, where they will face either DeWitt or Belleville at the Breslin Center.
