Games We’re Watching Across Metro Detroit (Dec. 8–9, 2025)

DETROIT, MI — December 8, 2025

The high school basketball season continues to heat up as teams across Metro Detroit take the floor tonight and tomorrow. From bounce-back opportunities to undefeated teams looking to stay perfect, here are the matchups Detroit Varsity Sports has its eyes on.

Southfield A&T (1–1) at Detroit Country Day (2–0)

Date: Tonight, 12/8/25 — Detroit Country Day HS

Southfield A&T enters tonight’s matchup looking to regroup after a 77–56 loss to Canton. Meanwhile, Detroit Country Day is off to a powerful start, averaging 82 points per game and coming off an 81–67 victory over Byron Center.

Country Day’s offensive firepower is among the best in the state so far, while Southfield A&T’s scoring average sits at 57. A&T must elevate their defensive intensity to slow down Country Day’s pace.

What we’re watching:

  • Can Southfield A&T contain Country Day’s scoring machine?

  • Will A&T respond after a tough loss?

  • Can Country Day maintain its explosive offensive rhythm?

Utica (2–1) at Stoney Creek (1–1)

Date: Tonight, 12/8/25 at 7:00 PM — Stoney Creek HS

Utica rides into tonight’s matchup after a 63–55 win over Troy in the MAC/OAA Showcase. Stoney Creek, also coming off a MAC/OAA Showcase win against Utica Eisenhower, looks to build on their first victory of the season.

Both teams appear evenly matched, setting the stage for a competitive non-conference contest.

What we’re watching:

  • Will Utica push its record to 3–1?

  • Can Stoney Creek stack back-to-back wins?

  • Guard play and tempo will be major factors.

Detroit Denby (1–0) vs Detroit Western (3–0)

Date: Tonight, 12/8/25 at 7:00 PM — Denby HS

One of the must-see games of the night. Denby looks to stay perfect, but Western enters undefeated with one of the best defenses in the area — allowing just 36.3 points per game.

This matchup has all the traits of a physical defensive battle.

What we’re watching:

  • Can Denby handle Western’s elite defensive pressure?

  • Will Western remain unbeaten on the road?

  • Low-scoring game likely favors Western.

Bloomfield Hills (2–0) vs Birmingham Groves (2–1)

Date: Tomorrow, 12/9/25 at 7:00 PM — Bloomfield Hills HS

Bloomfield Hills aims to stay unbeaten at home, while Groves enters hot after a strong win over Warren De La Salle. Groves’ offense has shown flashes of consistency early, but Bloomfield Hills has proven to be one of the most balanced teams in Oakland County so far.

What we’re watching:

  • Can Groves keep trending upward?

  • Will Bloomfield Hills protect home court and remain undefeated?

  • Perimeter shooting could be the difference.

Detroit U of D Jesuit (0–3) vs Warren Lincoln (1–0)

Date: Tomorrow, 12/9/25 — U of D Jesuit HS

Jesuit is still hunting for its first win after a challenging start to the season. Warren Lincoln comes in confident after defeating Renaissance at the Horatio Williams Kick-Off Classic.

Jesuit needs a strong defensive outing to avoid falling to 0–4.

What we’re watching:

  • Can Jesuit finally break through?

  • Will Lincoln carry its showcase momentum into this matchup?

  • Pressure is high for Jesuit’s young roster.

Lake Orion (1–1) vs Novi (1–1)

Date: Tomorrow, 12/9/25 at 7:00 PM — Lake Orion HS

Both teams sit at .500 entering tomorrow’s matchup. Lake Orion is coming off an impressive 72–53 win over Davison, while Novi looks to rediscover rhythm after a mixed start.

What we’re watching:

  • Which team secures a winning record?

  • Lake Orion’s momentum vs Novi’s resilience

  • A battle of contrasting styles

Oak Park (0–0) vs Melvindale (0–2)

Date: Tomorrow, 12/9/25 — Oak Park HS

It’s opening night for Oak Park in their 2025–26 campaign. Melvindale enters still searching for its first win after a tough start that included a loss to undefeated Livonia Franklin.

What we’re watching:

  • Oak Park’s debut performance

  • Will Melvindale show improvement?

  • Early-season chemistry and rotations on both sides

Oxford (2–0) vs Troy Athens (2–1)

Date: Tomorrow, 12/9/25 — Oxford HS

Oxford looks to continue its undefeated run after narrow wins over Groves and Fraser. Athens, at 2–1, provides a strong challenge with a balanced roster capable of playing spoiler.

What we’re watching:

  • Can Oxford move to 3–0?

  • Will Athens’ balanced scoring overcome Oxford’s defense?

Birmingham Seaholm (2–0) at Rochester Adams (0–2)

Date: Tomorrow — Rochester Adams HS

Seaholm has started the season strong, while Adams is still looking for its first victory. Seaholm hopes to keep momentum rolling against a hungry Adams squad.

What we’re watching:

  • Will Seaholm stay undefeated?

  • Can Adams defend home court and get in the win column?

  • Guard play will be key

Royal Oak (2–0) vs Walled Lake Western (1–2)

Date: Tomorrow — Royal Oak HS

Royal Oak is off to a perfect start and aims to extend its win streak at home. Western, sitting at 1–2, looks to rebound and secure a much-needed road win.

What we’re watching:

  • Royal Oak’s strong start vs Western’s urgency

  • Defensive execution from both sides

  • Royal Oak’s home-court advantage
