Cass Tech Survives Rivalry Thriller Against King, 27–22

Detroit Cass Tech and Detroit Martin Luther King delivered another chapter to one of the fiercest rivalries in high school football — and this one came with extra drama.

Security was tight at MLK’s campus with a heavy police presence, and only select spectators — mostly parents — were allowed inside. The game resumed in the 3rd quarter with 5:58 on the clock, a new officiating crew in place, and Cass Tech holding the ball. On the first drive back, Cass #7 scored to extend the lead to 27–0. It would be the last time Cass found the end zone.

From there, King transformed into a completely different team. Penalties on Cass and explosive plays by King swung momentum. By the start of the 4th quarter, after a Cass unsportsmanlike penalty that led to an ejection, King punched in their first touchdown and added a two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 27–8.

King kept pressing. A breakout run by #10 set up another score, followed by a successful two-point attempt from #22. Suddenly, it was 27–16 with plenty of time left.

Cass tried to answer, but King’s defense came alive. A key 4th-and-1 stop gave King the ball and momentum. They quickly marched into the red zone, and with under a minute left, King’s #6 scored untouched to make it 27–22.

King attempted an onside kick and recovered, giving them one last chance to steal the game. But with time expiring, Cass #6 broke through with a clutch sack to seal the win.

Cass Tech claimed the rivalry victory — and the Cup — in dramatic fashion.
