Drama at Wayne State: Cass Tech vs. King Suspended in Rivalry Showdown

The annual Detroit rivalry game between Cass Technical High School and Detroit Martin Luther King High School at Wayne State University delivered all the intensity fans expected — and then some.

Tension Before Kickoff

Before the first snap, the atmosphere was charged. During the pregame coin toss, King’s captains refused to shake hands with Cass Tech’s captains, setting the tone for a heated matchup. Cass would go on to win the toss and defer, kicking the ball to King to open the game.

First-Half Dominance

Fueled by energy from their rowdy student section (which packed the home side of the stadium), Cass Tech came out strong. The Technicians jumped out to a commanding 20–0 lead by halftime, controlling the game on both sides of the ball.

Third-Quarter Chaos

With 5:58 remaining in the third quarter, the game was abruptly stopped. For nearly 40 minutes, players and fans were left waiting as officials and security addressed issues with spectators in the Concord area. The situation escalated to the point where fans were asked to return to their seats — and ultimately, the game was suspended due to safety concerns.

What’s Next

According to early reports, the matchup will resume on Saturday, September 20th at 2:00 PM at Cass Tech Field — with no spectators allowed. While this has not yet been officially confirmed by the school district, it’s clear that the rivalry’s intensity reached new levels.

The Bigger Picture

Cass Tech and King have long been at the center of Detroit high school football, and this year’s clash proves that their rivalry remains as fierce as ever. What was supposed to be one of the biggest stages of the season has now turned into an unprecedented two-day event.
